Cananga Oil

Cananga Oil History

The Cananga tree is native to Southeast Asia. You can find it in Australia and on the Islands of both the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. It is also common on the Island of Java in Indonesia.

The tree has drooping flowers that are yellow and narrow. This is the part that produces the essential oil and can be harvested every two months.

You could easily mistake this yellow-flowered tropical tree for the ylang-ylang, and the two are often used interchangeably. This is because the Cananga, also known as Cananga odorata forma macrophylla belongs to the same botanical genus and species as the ylang-ylang.

But the two plants are different. The Cananga carries a higher content of Beta-caryophyllene, which is the compound responsible for healthy skin. Cananga essential oil also has a less floral scent than ylang-ylang. And it is greener.

The Cananga tree grows quite tall. It can grow up to 30 meters high and this makes harvesting the flowers that are used to make the oil tough. The essential oil is extracted using the steam-distillation process, which is mainly done on the Island of Java.

In addition to its healing properties and use in adding fragrance to soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes. The wood of the Cananga tree has long been used to make canoes, and sometimes in crafting furniture. To a lesser degree, it is used in spicy note food flavorings as well as alcoholic and soft drinks.
