Tagetes essential oil possesses a fresh, sweet, floral, slightly citrus-like aroma. It is of medium viscosity that can turn thick and/or gel-like when exposed to air. It is yellow to orange in color.

The main components of Tagetes oils are limonene, ocimene, tagetone, and valeric acid.

Note that Tagetes is a variety of marigold. It should not be confused with the marigold that gives us Calendula and healing Calendula infused carrier oils. Both have very different properties and very different applications.

Tagetes essential oil is extracted from the Tagetes Minuta (T.minuta) through the process of steam distillation. It is a tall upright plant in the sunflower family that has small flowers native to the southern half of South America.

The essential oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stalks through a process involving steam distillation. Tagetes minuta has numerous local names that vary by region. In the Andes, it is known as Huacatay or Wacatay, and in other regions, it is common as chinchilla, chiquilla, chilca, zuico, suico, or anisillo.

This particular spice of Marigold can grow to become 0.6 to 2 meters tall. T. minuta is extensively used medicinally as a condiment and herbal tea in a wide variety of fields in its native region and as a popular traditional folk remedy and in complementary and medical therapy.

This in turn prevents any form of infections or complications such as tetanus or wounds getting septic.

A spasm is a sudden involuntary contraction of a muscle, a group of muscles, or a hollow organ such as the heart. A spasmodic muscle contraction may be caused by many medical conditions, including dystonia. Most commonly, it is a muscle cramp that is accompanied by a sudden burst of pain.

Tagetes essential oil is antispasmodic and a sedative, also a useful agent in combating any physical muscular spasms within your body. Being a natural relaxant, this particular oil relaxes any type of body spasms in the body and gives relief from spasmodic coughs, diarrhea, cramps, and convulsions.

4. Offers Pain and Inflammatory Relief

The sedative property of tagetes essential oil is well known and has been in use for a long time. It sedates inflammation and irritation in the digestive, nervous, excretory, and neurotic systems, as well as convulsions, afflictions, anxiety, stress, depression, anger, panic, and other emotional and psychological hyper reactions. Tagetes essential oil is phototoxic. It is therefore recommended that going into direct sunlight and exposing your skin be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours after application.

Tagetes essential oil may cause sensitive reactions and irritations on the skin when applied topically. A patch test should be done to ensure that concentration levels are acceptable. Also, it is recommended to dilute the oil before application.

Tagetes is generally harmful to pets, whether ingested or applied to the fur.
